Plavix & Aspirin Contraindications

Plavix and aspirin are anticoagulant medications used to prevent the formation of blood clots that may lead to heart attacks or strokes. Plavix is a prescription-only medication that works by keeping blood platelets from forming clots. Aspirin is a salicylate that works by stopping the body's production of certain natural substances that contribute to clot formation. Plavix and aspirin share several of the same contraindications. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about all contraindications before taking Plavix or aspirin.
  1. NSAIDs

    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a group of prescription and non-prescription drugs including ibuprofen, naproxen and several others. Like aspirin, these drugs block substances in the body that contribute to pain and inflammation. They can also increase the risk of bleeding when combined with anticoagulants. Your doctor can provide you with more information on taking NSAIDS with Plavix or aspirin.

    Other Anticoagulants

    • There are a number of other prescription anticoagulants available. These medications should not be used in conjunction with Plavix or aspirin unless directed by a doctor. Make sure your doctor and pharmacist are aware of any other anticoagulants you are taking.

    Other Medications

    • Several other medications may impact the effectiveness of Plavix or aspirin. These include certain antidepressants, chemotherapy drugs, anti-seizure medications. Certain over the counter medications may also affect Plavix and aspirin, including other salicylates, such as Doan's and Bayer Select Backache Pain Formula. Make sure your doctor and pharmacist are aware of all prescription and non-prescription medications you are taking to avoid a potentially negative interaction with Plavix or aspirin.

    Alcohol

    • Alcohol use is contraindicated for both Plavix and aspirin therapy. Alcohol may increase the risk of stomach and intestinal bleeding while taking Plavix and aspirin. Your doctor can provide you with more information about the risks of drinking alcohol during Plavix or aspirin therapy.
