How to Fit a BPM Cuff

A blood pressure monitor is an inflatable cuff that is typically placed around the upper arm. It is used in conjunction with a stethoscope to determine blood pressure. Two different measurements are taken: diastolic pressure, the pressure on the arterial walls when the heart is resting between contractions, and systolic pressure, the arterial wall pressure while the heart is contracting. The cuff must fit properly to obtain an accurate reading.

Instructions

    • 1

Estimate the cuff size by looking at the size of the patient's upper arm. If it is a child, use a pediatric-sized cuff. For small or average-sized adults, use the cuff labeled "adult". For adults who are more muscular or have a lot of fat, use the extra large cuff.

    • 2

Instruct the person to roll up his sleeve so the upper arm is accessible. Place the inside of the cuff behind the patient's upper arm. Wrap the cuff around the arm and loosely fasten the Velcro.

    • 3

Place the patient's arm in a supported position with his palm up. Place the pads of your index and middle fingers on the front of the elbow. Apply a small amount of pressure and move around until you can feel a pulse.

    • 4

Turn the cuff to align the "artery" label of the cuff with the spot where the pulse was felt. Tighten the Velcro to secure the cuff in this position.
