Natural Remedies for Water Retention in the Ankles & Feet
Water retention may be a common problem for many people. Pregnancy, being on your feet too long and minor injuries often are to blame. While some may turn to medications or see a physician, these are not the only remedies available. Commonly called edema, there are some alternative remedies to treat this condition at home.-
Elevation
-
Elevating the lower extremities may relieve water retention in the legs and feet. For this alternative approach, you should lie down with your feet above the level of your heart. For this reason, some choose to do this while sleeping. You do not need special equipment, as pillows are able to help you achieve the desired amount of elevation. Do this as often as needed everyday to receive the maximum benefit.
Compression
-
Another alternative remedy for water retention in the feet and legs includes the use of compression garments, commonly called support hose, gloves or sleeves. This snug fitting garment may reduce or eliminate edema by squeezing the space between the cells, which allows swelling to occur. Stockings come in various sizes. However, you may need to get them fitted, which may be done by a health care professional or qualified staff at a medical supply retailer. You should regularly use the item throughout the day when you are on your feet the most. It is important to remove these for at least a few hours daily, typically while sleeping.
Exercise
-
An exercise regimen may treat fluid retention in the legs and feet. Low impact exercises improve circulation. While many exercises may accomplish this, consider aquatic exercises. The hydrostatic pressure adds to the effectiveness. Regular exercise may prevent this condition in the long term.
Other Considerations
-
If you experience edema for no apparent reason on a frequent basis, exhibit other symptoms besides swelling or if you suffer from another health condition, consult with your physician. In some cases, fluid retention in the lower extremities is related to disease and disorder within the body.
