How to Measure a Jobst Compression Hose

Compression stockings, known as thrombo embolic deterrents (TEDs), affect the venous and lymphatic systems by decreasing compression that moves up the leg. Compression, combined with muscle movement in the calf, aids in circulating blood and lymph fluid.

A physician will determine which type of stocking will best treat each specific condition. The amount of pressure required from a compression stocking and sizing depends on the patient, the severity and type of venous disease treated. Severe venous disease requires filling a stocking prescription at medical supply stores. For less-severe conditions, however, measure the stockings at home and purchase them online.

Instructions

  1. Step-by-Step Compression Stocking Measuring.

    • 1

Record a measurement for each leg, and take measurements upon awaking in the morning, when legs have the least amount of edema. Measure the circumference of the ankle for the knee-high, thigh-high, waist-high, maternity and chap-length styles: Start the measuring tape at the narrow part of the ankle just above the round protruding malleoli bones on both sides of the ankle.

    • 2

Measure the circumference of the calf for knee-high, thigh-high, waist-high, maternity and chap-length stocking styles: Start the measuring tape at the largest part of the calf between the ankle and the knee.

    • 3

Measure the circumference of the thigh for thigh-high, waist-high, maternity and chap length styles: Start the measuring tape at the largest part of the thigh right under the crease of the leg.

For chap or waist-length hose styles, measure the circumference of the ankle, the thigh and around the largest part of the hips: Start the measuring tape at the widest area of the hips, and measure the waist circumference.

    • 4

Measure the length of the leg from the bend in the knee to the floor for knee-high styles: Sit on a chair with legs bent at a 90-degree angle. This measurement will apply to large and tall men's sizes.

Measure the length from the crease of the buttocks to the floor for thigh-high styles: Ask a friend for assistance with this portion of the task.

Record the measurements, and use them in conjunction with the sizing chart found in the References section.
