How to Determine the Correct Blood Pressure Cuff Size

When monitoring blood pressure, it is essential to use the appropriate equipment to obtain an accurate reading. Care must be taken to determine the correct blood pressure cuff size in proportion to upper arm size. If the cuff is too small, it will result in a false high blood pressure measurement. If the cuff is too large, a false low measurement will result. By carefully following the steps to determine the correct blood pressure cuff size, you can ensure an accurate blood pressure measurement.

Note the four sizes of blood pressure cuffs available for use in the United States:
      Small adult (12X22 cm)
      Adult (16X30 cm)
      Large adult (16X36 cm)
      Adult thigh (16X42 cm)

Measure upper arm circumference using a flexible tape measure, around the largest portion of the arm, midway between elbow and shoulder. Record the measurement in centimeters.

Choose the appropriate blood pressure cuff size according to the following guidelines:
For an arm circumference of 22 to 26 cm, use the "small adult" size cuff.
For an arm circumference of 27 to 34 cm, use the "adult" size cuff.
For an arm circumference of 35 to 44 cm, use the "large adult" size cuff.
For an arm circumference of 45 to 52 cm, use the "adult thigh" size cuff.

Remeasure arm circumference if there is an increase or decrease in weight to determine the correct blood pressure cuff size.
