Hydrochlorot Side Effects With Medications

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) interacts differently with other medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. Consult with your physician before starting any new medications, herbL supplements or vitamins, if you are currently taking HCTZ.
  1. Pre-existing conditions

    • Maintain a list of your current medications, even those that are non-prescription. Share that list with your doctor, particularly if you are being treated for an existing medical condition. Alert your doctor to any reactions you have to medications like penicillin, codeine and sulfa drugs.

    Drug Interaction

    • The following medications have been shown to cause reactions when used with HCTZ: cisapride, bone marrow drugs, codeine, diazoxide, lithium, digoxin, phenobarbital, NSAIDs, probenecid, potassium medications, diuretics, corticosteroids, trimethoprim, amphetimines, quinidine, injectable anti-allergy medications and gold injections.

    Blood Level Side Effects

    • Blood level disorders caused by long term or heavy use of HCTZ include: hypokalemia (low potassium), hypomagnesemia (very low levels of magnesium in the blood), hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid), gout, high blood sugar, hyperlipidemia (raised lipid levels) and hypercalcemia (elevated calcium blood levels).

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of a drug interaction or side effect of HCTZ include: irregular heartbeat, racing pulse, numbness, weakness, muscle pain, tingling, restlessness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, skin rash, skin peeling, jaundice, stomach pain, dry mouth, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and constipation. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, contact your physician immediately, especially if you are taking other medication with HCTZ
