Norvasc Prescription Drug Side Effects

Norvasc is a prescription medication used to treat chronic chest pain or angina. Despite its effectiveness, Norvasc poses a risk for side effects in some patients.

  1. Significance

    • In clinical studies published by the Food and Drug Administration, the common side effects of Norvasc were not serious in nature. In fact, only 1.5 percent of patients discontinued use of the drug due to adverse reactions.

    Types of Side Effects

    • The most common side effects of Norvasc include swelling of the extremities, flushing, dizziness, awareness of your heartbeat, headache, fatigue, nausea and drowsiness.

    Time Frame

    • Generally, Norvasc side effects occur during your first few weeks of treatment and disappear as your body acclimates to the drug.

    Risks

    • In rare cases, angina worsens with use of Norvasc or heart attacks occur. Serious allergic reactions occur in some patients.

    Considerations

    • Because there is not yet sufficient evidence that Norvasc has no harmful effects upon the fetus, doctors typically do not prescribe the drug for pregnant women. If you have a history of congestive heart failure, liver disease or hypotension, you are at increased risk for serious side effects from Norvasc.
