Heart Failure Signs & Symptoms

Cardiovascular disease encompasses a number of common and dangerous conditions relating to the heart and cardiovascular system. Heart failure is a leading cause of death, especially in the United States. There are many signs and symptoms of heart failure that may allow you to address the condition before it's too late.
  1. Swelling

    • Swelling of both the abdomen and lower areas of the body is a possible sign of heart failure. Lower body areas that may be symptomatic include the feet, ankles and legs.

    Excitability

    • This particular symptom is in relation to your heart rate. Those with heart failure often experience an increased or odd heartbeat.

    Breathing Problems

    • A shortness of breath, also known as dyspnea, may be a sign of heart failure. It will be especially prevalent while lying down or during exercise.

    Exercise Problems

    • You may have a problem performing exercise of all types. On this same note, fatigue and weakness, two other common symptoms of heart failure, may be responsible.

    Considerations

    • These particular signs and symptoms are specific to chronic heart failure. Acute or sudden-onset heat failure has many of the same symptoms, in addition to a heavy buildup of fluid and chest pain. Acute heart failure symptoms are also likely to be much more severe and arise more quickly.
