Side Effects of Atenolol in Males

Atenolol is a medication commonly prescribed to treat chest pain and high blood pressure. It is also sometimes given to people who have just suffered a heart attack to limit damage to the heart and improve the chances of survival. Atenolol is a beta-blocker that works by improving how the heart pumps. Many doctors will prescribe Atenolol along with a change in diet and exercise to help improve heart health.

Impotence

• Some men taking Atenolol may experience impotence, less desire for sex and difficulty reaching orgasm.

Fainting

• Fainting, feeling lightheaded or any unexplained loss of consciousness while taking Atenolol should immediately be reported to your doctor.

Heart Rate

• If you feel like your heart is beating more slowly than normal or your heart rate is uneven, stop taking Atenolol and contact your doctor immediately.

Stomach Trouble

• Stomach pain, nausea, loss of appetite, jaundice and dark urine while taking Atenolol can indicate a potentially serious complication. If you experience any of these side effects, notify your doctor immediately.

Serious Side Effects

• Other serious side effects of Atenolol that should be reported to your doctor include depression or mood changes, cold feet and hands, shortness of breath and foot and ankle swelling.

Less Serious Side Effects

• Some side effects of Atenolol are not an indication of a potentially serious problem and do not need to be reported to your doctor. They include difficulty sleeping, feeling tired or being anxious or nervous.
