Features of Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most common STI in the United States, with an estimated 1.3 million new cases each year.
Symptoms
Chlamydia often does not cause any symptoms, especially in women. In men, the most common symptom is a burning or itching sensation during urination. Other symptoms in men can include:
- Painful or swollen testicles
- Discharge from the penis
- Fever
In women, symptoms of chlamydia can include:
- Painful or burning urination
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Bleeding between periods
- Pelvic pain
Complications
If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious complications, including:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): A serious infection of the female reproductive organs
- Ectopic pregnancy: A pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus
- Infertility: The inability to conceive a child
- Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV): A rare, severe form of chlamydia that can cause skin ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, and fever
Treatment
Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics. The most common antibiotics used to treat chlamydia are azithromycin and doxycycline.
Prevention
Chlamydia can be prevented by using condoms during sex. It is also important to be tested for chlamydia if you have any symptoms of the infection or if you have had unprotected sex with a new partner.
