What is Chlamydea?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most common bacterial STI in the United States, with an estimated 1.3 million new cases each year.

Symptoms

Chlamydia often does not cause any symptoms, especially in women. In men, symptoms may include:

* Burning or itching sensation while urinating

* Discharge from the penis

* Pain or swelling in the testicles

In women, symptoms may include:

* Abnormal vaginal discharge

* Burning or itching sensation while urinating

* Pain during intercourse

* Bleeding between periods

Treatment

Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics. It is important to take all of the medication prescribed by your doctor, even if you start to feel better. If you stop taking the medication too early, the infection could come back.

Prevention

The best way to prevent chlamydia is to use condoms every time you have sex. You should also get tested for chlamydia if you have any symptoms of the infection or if you have had unprotected sex with someone who has chlamydia.

Complications

If chlamydia is not treated, it can lead to serious complications, including:

* Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women

* Infertility in women and men

* Ectopic pregnancy

* Vision problems in infants born to mothers with chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common infection, but it can be easily treated and prevented. If you have any symptoms of chlamydia, see your doctor right away.
