How to Soothe a Sore Throat

A sore throat is a common symptom of many illnesses, including the common cold, flu, and tonsillitis. While most sore throats will go away on their own within a few days, there are a few things you can do to help soothe the pain and discomfort.

Drink plenty of fluids

Staying hydrated helps to thin mucus and keep your throat moist, which can help to reduce irritation and pain. Water is always the best choice, but you can also try warm tea with honey, or a cool glass of lemonade.

Gargle with salt water

Salt water helps to reduce inflammation and swelling, and can also help to remove mucus from the back of the throat. To make a salt water gargle, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water. Gargle for 30 seconds, then spit out the water. You can do this several times a day.

Take over-the-counter pain relievers

Pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to relieve pain and inflammation. Be sure to follow the directions on the package carefully.

Use a humidifier

A humidifier can help to add moisture to the air, which can help to soothe a sore throat. You can use a cool-mist humidifier or a warm-mist humidifier. If you use a warm-mist humidifier, be sure to clean it regularly to prevent the growth of bacteria.

Rest

Getting plenty of rest can help your body to fight off the infection that is causing your sore throat. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep each night.

Avoid irritants

Certain things can irritate your throat and make your sore throat worse. These include smoke, dust, and pollen. If you are allergic to anything, be sure to avoid contact with your allergen.

If your sore throat is severe or does not improve within a few days, see your doctor. They can determine what is causing your sore throat and recommend the best treatment.
