How do you save yourself from choking?

If you are choking and alone:

1. Call 911: Reach for the phone if you are near it, or call 911 on any available phone.

2. Perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself: Stand in front of a sturdy object, such as the back of a chair, countertop, or sink. Place one fist against your abdomen, slightly above your navel. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press it forcefully into your abdomen. Repeat this motion quickly and forcefully, until the object is dislodged or until you lose consciousness.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown:

a) Place your fist above your navel: Stand up straight and place the thumb side of your fist between your navel and the bottom of your ribcage.

b) Grasp your fist: Wrap your other hand over your clenched fist, with the thumb tucked in to avoid injury.

c) Press forcefully: Deliver quick, upward thrusts into your abdomen. Aim for forceful movements rather than gentle pushes.

d) Repeat the thrusts: Continue until the object pops out or you lose consciousness.

3. Seek medical attention: If you manage to dislodge the object, go to the nearest hospital or emergency care center to be evaluated, as there may still be injuries or airway damage.

Remember that prevention is key. Take precautions when eating, such as avoiding talking while chewing and cutting food into bite-sized pieces. If someone is choking, encourage them to cough forcefully or seek help from others if they cannot speak or breathe. Early intervention can significantly increase the chances of a successful recovery.
