How do you prevent atelectasis?

Incentive spirometry

An incentive spirometer is a device that encourages you to take slow, deep breaths. This helps to increase lung expansion and prevent atelectasis. To use an incentive spirometer, sit up straight and place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Inhale slowly and deeply, and then exhale slowly through the device. Repeat this process for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day.

Deep breathing exercises

Deep breathing exercises can also help to prevent atelectasis. To do a deep breathing exercise, sit or lie down in a comfortable position and place one hand on your abdomen and the other hand on your chest. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise and your chest to expand. Exhale slowly through your mouth, allowing your abdomen to fall and your chest to relax. Repeat this process for 5 to 10 minutes, several times a day.

Ambulation

Ambulation, or walking, can help to prevent atelectasis by promoting lung expansion and circulation. Aim to walk for at least 30 minutes each day, and more if you are able.

Coughing

Coughing can help to clear secretions from the lungs and prevent atelectasis. If you have a cough, try to cough forcefully and deeply, and avoid coughing in short, shallow bursts.

Other measures

Other measures that can help to prevent atelectasis include:

Avoiding smoking. Smoking can damage the lungs and make them more susceptible to atelectasis.

Maintaining a healthy weight. Obesity can increase the risk of atelectasis.

Managing chronic conditions. Chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, and heart failure can increase the risk of atelectasis. Work with your doctor to manage these conditions effectively.
