BI-RADS What Your
BI-RADS stands for the Breast Imaging Reporting and Database System. It is a system used by radiologists to classify breast imaging findings and to recommend further action, such as additional imaging or biopsy.
The BI-RADS categories are as follows:
* Category 0: Incomplete, need additional imaging
* Category 1: Negative
* Category 2: Benign findings
* Category 3: Probably benign findings
* Category 4: Suspicious abnormalities, biopsy recommended
* Category 5: Highly suggestive of malignancy, biopsy recommended
* Category 6: Known biopsy-proven malignancy
Your BI-RADS category is based on the results of your mammogram and ultrasound, if you had one. The radiologist will take into account the following factors when determining your BI-RADS category:
* The size, shape, and density of the breast tissue
* The presence of any calcifications or masses
* The characteristics of any calcifications or masses
* Your personal history of breast cancer or other breast conditions
Your doctor will discuss your BI-RADS category with you and recommend any further action that may be necessary.
