Non-Exercise Ways to Raise HDL
Cholesterol is important to health. It is a component in the formation of bile acids, progesterone, estrogen, and vitamin D. It is also necessary to the healthy function of cell membranes. Cholesterol is carried in the bloodstream via HDL and LDL (high- and low-density lipoprotein). HDL is considered good cholesterol; conversely, LDL is called the "bad" cholesterol. Too much LDL cholesterol can lead to heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Increasing HDL will decrease the risk of health problems, and you don't have to exercise constantly to accomplish this.-
What is HDL's Function?
-
HDL is considered the good cholesterol because it picks up the bad cholesterol, LDL, and takes it to the liver to be disposed. The more HDL in the blood, the less room for LDL.
Niacin
-
A very effective way to increase HDL is to take niacin. Niacin is a B vitamin that can actually raise HDL count by 15 to 35 percent. It also decreases LDL. Though it is available over the counter, it is not nearly effective as the higher-dosage niacin your physician will prescribe. There are some side effects, including significant facial flushing. However the newer, sustained-release form seems to cause less of this.
Statins
-
Niacin is effective, but it is even more effective when taken in conjunction with a statin drug. Statins such as Lipitor, Zocor, and Tricor are prescribed to decrease LDL. They also raise the HDL by about 10 percent.
Other Medications
-
Some other medications that are prescribed, though not as frequently, are fibrates. Gemfibrozil and Fenofibrate are two of these. They are effective in lowering LDL and show some modest success in raising HDL. Another class of medication is bile acid sequestrants. These reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine. They are not often prescribed due to their side effects.
Other Changes
-
Some other changes that can help in raising HDL levels are lifestyle alterations. Quitting smoking can significantly raise your HDL level. Eating in moderation to maintain or lose weight can also help in managing cholesterol. Other changes that will help raise HDL are eating healthier fats such as olive and safflower oil and decreasing trans and saturated fats in your diet. It is also important to limit your alcohol intake to no more than one to two drinks a day.
