8 Week Cholesterol Cure

The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure is a book that was published in 1987, written by Robert E. Kowalski. Before he died in 2007, Kowalski authored many books on the ways to use diet to lower cholesterol. He became a big proponent of healthy eating after undergoing heart bypass surgery at a young age and making a decision to find a treatment for high cholesterol.
  1. Reducing Risk Factors

    • Smoking is a big risk factor for heart disease and related conditions, so one part of the 8-Week Cholesterol Cure is to quit smoking. Another one is to begin a regular exercise program, if you have not already done so. This does not have to be a strenuous weight-training program; a two-mile walk every day is one suggestion.

    Foods to Avoid

    • It's no secret that if you want to lower your cholesterol, you need to avoid foods that have a lot of fat or are high in cholesterol, such as egg yolks, whole milk, butter, meat with a lot of fat content and fried foods.

    Foods That Lower Cholesterol

    • The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure is most famous, not for telling us about foods and activities to avoid, but for telling us about foods that we can eat that actually help lower cholesterol. Some of these include oat bran and foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids. The book also recommends eating foods high in fiber and lots of vegetables.

    Supplements

    • The cover of The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure, published in 2002, says, "Learn why you must use supplements; diet is not enough." One of the main vitamin supplements Kowalski recommends is niacin, also known as vitamin B-3. Others include fish oil, vitamin C and E, and calcium and magnesium.
