Statin Myths

Statins are drugs that are prescribed mainly for the control of cholesterol. Statins reduce the levels of cholesterol in the body by slowing down cholesterol production and enhancing the liver's ability to remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. Statin drugs have become as controversial as they are popular. There remains a great deal of myths surrounding statins among both the medical and non-medical communities.
  1. Types of Statins

    • Statins come in pill form.

Most statins function similarly. Some of the brand names of statins are: Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor, Mevacor, Lescol and Crestor.

    Controversy 1

    • Studies have shown that statins do lower cholesterol levels. However, some believe that, although they lower cholesterol levels, they only suppress the problem, they don't cure it.

    Controversy 2

    • Many nutritionists stand firmly by the belief that any person with high cholesterol can lower his level by changing a few dietary habits, like eating less (or no) sugar and increasing intake levels of foods rich in fiber and grains. This may not be true as some individuals may require medical intervention as well as a change dietary intake.

    Controversy 3

    • Another controversial belief is that through the use of statins, a user is more likely to develop heart disease. Many in the medical industry believe that this is untrue.

    Controversy 4

    • Some believe that statins do not lower cholesterol levels at all, and go as far as to say that these drugs are designed to bring more money to the medical industry.
