Lovastatin Side Effects

Lovastatin is the generic name for the drug Mevacor. It is used to lower cholesterol and also to lower blood pressure and the risk of heart attack. It works by reducing fatty substances in the body. Like many medications, Lovastatin may cause some side effects.
  1. Major Side Effects

    • Seek medical attention immediately if you experience chest pain, muscle pain, severe stomach pain, dark urine or signs of an allergic reaction.

    Minor Side Effects

    • Some users of Lovastatin have reported side effects such as altered taste, blurry vision, constipation, dizziness, headache, heartburn, gas and indigestion. Other reported side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, muscle cramps or pain, itching, rash and nausea.

    Warnings

    • Lovastatin should not be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should also not be taken if you have liver problems or low blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you have any drug allergies, muscle disorders, kidney disease, diabetes or hypothyroid problems.

    Drug Interactions

    • Medications that have been shown to interact with Lovastatin are anticoagulants, azole antifungals, ritonavir, bosentan and rifampin.

    Overdose

    • If you think you may have taken too much Lovastatin, seek immediate medical attention. Always follow your doctor's dosing instructions for the best results.
