Types of Foods to Help Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance created in the body. While the body does need some cholesterol to function properly, too much cholesterol can lead to blockage of the circulatory system. There are several types of foods that help decrease low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in the body.
  1. Oatmeal and Oat Bran

    • The high levels of soluble fibers in oatmeal and oat bran help reduce LDL, or "bad," cholesterol. Soluble fibers, which can also be found in kidney beans, apples and pears, stop the intestines from absorbing cholesterol.

    Nuts

    • Nuts like walnuts, almonds and pecans are a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fatty acids help reduce blood cholesterol by keeping blood vessels healthy.

    Omega-3 Fatty Acids

    • Fatty fish like lake trout, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon contain high doses of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids not only help reduce cholesterol but also help decrease blood pressure and the risk of blood clots.

    Olive Oil

    • Olive oil contains antioxidants that help lower LDL while keeping high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good" cholesterol, at high levels. Olive oil also helps the heart maintain good health.

    Plant Sterols

    • Plant sterols help the body stop the absorption of cholesterol. Foods like margarine, yogurt and orange juice with plant sterols can help the absorption of LDL by up to 10 percent.
