Negative Side Effects of Zocor

Zocor is the brand name of the generic medication simvastatin. It is used in the treatment of high cholesterol. Even though it has a great many positive side effects, there are a few negative side effects of Zocor.

    • Zocor is usually prescribed when conservative methods of lowering cholesterol have not been effective. Doctors initially recommend dietary changes and increased exercise before resulting to using a drug, such as Zocor.

    Time Frame

    • The effectiveness of Zocor should be monitored every 4 weeks. It is considered effective if lab tests indicate improved cholesterol levels.

    Identification

    • Initial negative side effects of Zocor include itching, muscle cramping or aching, stomach problems, headache and dizziness. A severe negative side effect is liver dysfunction or failure.

    Considerations

    • Zocor should not be prescribed to patients with existing liver disease. Also, combining Zocor with certain other medications may lead to irreversible muscle damage.

    Warning

    • The prescribing doctor should be immediately made aware of any muscle pain or weakness. It is also recommended that liver function tests are performed on a regular basis.
