Side Effects of Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is produced in the body. It is used in cell function. Some diseases and conditions lower the amount produced as do some prescriptions. More studies are needed, but early results indicate it may be helpful in hypertension, Alzheimer's disease and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) treatments. In most cases, side effects are mild.
  1. Good Side Effects

    • Coenzyme Q10 lowers cholesterol and triglycerides in blood levels.

    Lower Blood Sugar

    • In patients with diabetes or hypoglycemia, caution should be used when taking Coenzyme Q10 as it may lower blood sugar. Serum glucose-level monitoring should be done.

    Lower Blood Pressure

    • Blood pressure should be monitored when taking Coenzyme Q10. It can lower blood pressure and may cause people in hypertension therapy to make adjustments to their medication.

    Elevated Liver Enzymes

    • In one study, elevated liver enzymes were reported. Caution should be used when taking Coenyme Q10 if you have liver disease or are taking medications that may damage the liver.

    Mild Side Effects

    Decreased Oxygen

    • Some studies have reported decreases in blood oxygen levels that can cause organ damage. People with heart disease are often discouraged from vigorous exercise when taking Coenzyme Q10 for this reason.
