What Is the Generic Zocor?

Simvastatin is the first generic form of Zocor to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is used to prevent possible heart problems by lowering cholesterol. Grapefruit juice should be avoided when taking this medication. Obviously, if you are pregnant or nursing this medication may not be suitable for you, and this should be discussed with your doctor.

  1. Function

    • Simvastatin is prescribed to treat high cholesterol in patients. Because this medication reduces high cholesterol, it also reduces the risk of death from a stroke or heart attack.

    Dosages

    • This medication is given in tablet form and is prescribed to be taken by mouth once daily.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects may include abdominal pain, swelling, constipation, headache and insomnia. As with most medications, there is also a risk of allergic reaction.

    Drug Interactions

    • Clarithromycin, Erythromycin, HIV protease inhibitors and Nefazodone are not to be taken with Simvastatin.

    Warning

    • Your doctor should know if you have heart or liver disease before taking this medication. There is a possible risk of severe muscle damage.
