Start by talking to your doctor about the possible side effects of niacin. Make sure that he/she is aware of all other medications that you are taking as Niacin should not be taken with some other medications.

Take aspirin or Ibuprofen to reduce the flushing and itching feeling that many people get as a side effect of Niacin. These can often be taken 30 minutes before taking the Niacin to avoid or reduce this side effect.

Get up from a sitting or lying position slowly when taking Niacin to help reduce the feelings of dizziness. If you experience dizziness, make sure that you have something to hold on to as you get up. Talk to your doctor about taking the medication before bed to offset dizziness during the day.

Do not drink alcohol when taking this drug because alcohol can make the side effects of Niacin much worse.

Eat a snack before you take your medication to help with an upset stomach. Many doctors will suggest taking the medication before bed with a small snack.
