Fibromyalgia Fatigue Treatment Medication
Fibromyalgia is characterized by debilitating pain and fatigue. Several treatments are available, however, including medication.-
Diagnosis
-
The American College of Rheumatology developed a list of symptoms that includes widespread muscle pain on 11 of 18 "tender points," joint pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction.
Symptoms
-
According to the National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA), fibromyalgia fatigue is much more than tiredness: "It is a pervasive, all-encompassing exhaustion that can interfere with even the most basic and simple daily activities."
Medication
-
Cymbalta, an antidepressant, and Lyrica, an anticonvulsant---both of which have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as fibromyalgia treatments---can help fatigue and pain, says the NFA. According to Dr. Michael Brown, stimulants such as Ritalin (an ADD treatment) may be prescribed to keep you awake during the day.
Exercise
-
Doctors often recommend mild exercise for fibromyalgia sufferers, as long you can tolerate it. Exercise helps to build stamina, which can reduce fatigue.
Sleep Regulation
-
Fibromyalgia expert Dr. Mark Pellegrino states that anti-anxiety medications and sleep aids can help you fall asleep or get deeper sleep, to reduce daytime fatigue.
Alternative Treatments
-
Massage can relax muscles and improve sleep. Research is ongoing for the role of insufficient vitamin B-12 and D in fibromyalgia, reports the NFA. Let your doctor know about any over-the-counter supplements you are taking.
