How to Overcome Allergy & Sinus Trouble

Between 40 and 50 million Americans suffer from allergies. Allergies affect people differently, but one of the most common symptoms is a runny or congested nose. If allergies go untreated, they can lead to inflammation of the sinus cavity and eventually an infection can set in. Allergies and sinus trouble go hand-in-hand, but they can be overcome with medication and natural remedies. Taking the proper steps in overcoming allergies and sinus trouble can prevent complications.

Instructions

  1. Avoid Allergens

    • 1

Avoid any known allergens. Keep the windows and doors closed in your home and car to keep outside allergens away from your home, where the air is filtered and recirculated.

    • 2

Wash your bedding at least once a week in hot, soapy water to kill any dust mites that thrive off dust and pollen.

    • 3

Stay away from mucus-producing foods and beverages. Avoid dairy products because they cause the body to produce mucus. Don't eat highly processed sugars such as high-fructose corn syrup as they can irritate the sinus cavity. Avoid wheat products because they encourage mucus production.

    Use Medication

    • 4

Take a daily antihistamine. Use a drug such as loratadine on a daily basis. It comes in either a 12- or 24-hour tablet that makes it easy not to miss a dose. Take the drug consistently for the best results.

    • 5

Take a decongestant. Use it to reduce swelling in the sinuses and open the nasal passages to allow the mucus to be expelled and relieve sinus pressure.

    • 6

Take an expectorant to assist the body in loosening the thick mucus. Use it alongside the antihistamine and decongestant to aid in their effectiveness. Drink plenty of water when taking an expectorant because it can dehydrate you.
