Uncontrolled Sinus Infections

Uncontrolled sinus infections, or sinusitis, is caused by several factors and can lead to more serious complications, like nasal polyps, if left untreated. Most people will suffer from an uncontrolled sinus infection at least once.
  1. Causes

    • Uncontrolled sinus infections can start out as a simple allergy or cold. An infection starts to grow in your sinuses and causes inflammation that feels stuffy, painful and swollen. People with severe or chronic allergies are at risk for developing uncontrolled sinus infections.

    Symptoms

    • The symptoms of uncontrolled sinus infections include postnasal drip, a feeling of pressure around the nose and forehead, headaches and sometimes fever, if the infection is advanced. There is a general feeling of having a congested head.

    Treatments

    • One way to cure an uncontrolled sinus infection is by taking antibiotics that a doctor can prescribe. This will kill the bacteria and any remaining infection within a few days. Another easy treatment is to take a cough expectorant to drain the mucus and inhale steam over a bowl to clear passageways.

    Outlook

    • The outlook for recovering from uncontrolled sinus infections is good. For those that have structural issues with their nasal passages, for example, a deviated septum, there may be an increased likelihood of suffering from more sinus infections. People with allergies tend to have reoccurring uncontrolled sinus infections as well.

    Prevention

    • You can prevent uncontrolled sinus infections by avoiding allergic reactions, not catching colds, reducing dairy consumption to minimize mucus production and drink lots of water and tea to flush your system often.
