Herbal Tea to Relieve Sinus Pressure
Sinus pressure is the result of buildup in the sinus cavity. The sinus cavity rests in the middle of the head as an empty cavity that filters the air before it enters the lungs. When it is irritated or inflamed by the common cold, allergies or environmental pollutants, it over-produces mucus and swells causing pressure to be placed on the eyes, ears and teeth. Sinus pressure can make a person feel tired, can produce severe headaches and impair a person's mental clarity. Herbal tea can be used to treat and relieve basic or severe sinus pressure.-
Drink
-
Drink herbal tea to help reliever sinus pressure. Choose an herbal tea that will encourage the sinus cavity to open, like peppermint, lemon leaves or eucalyptus. Prepare a cup of tea by boiling water on the stove. Place one tea bag in a mug and pour the boiling water over the tea bag. Let the tea bag steep for five minutes. Add honey and sweeten to taste. Slowly sip on the tea allowing the steam of the tea to go up in the nose. As you swallow the tea take a deep breath in through your nostrils, encouraging the aroma to enter the sinus cavity. The herbal tea along with the warmth from the beverage will sooth and calm the swollen and irritated sinuses.
Hot Compress
-
Use the actual tea bags as a hot compress directly on the eyes and nose. Take a new peppermint, lemon leaves or eucalyptus tea bag and steep in hot water. Do not use an old tea bag in this process. Allow the tea to steep for only 30 seconds to keep most of the tea from dissolving in the water. Drain the tea bag slightly so the bag is not dripping. Lie down on your back and place the hot tea bags on your eyes and nose. This will relax the nasal passages and allow the aroma of the tea to enter the nose and into the sinus cavity.
Saline Wash
-
Purchase garlic tea from a health food store or herbal store. Place a tea bag in 1 cup warm water and allow the tea to steep for five minutes. Ring out the tea bag in the warm water and discard the tea bag. Add 1 tsp. sea salt to the garlic tea and place the solution in a nasal irrigation pot. Place the pot on the right nostril while tilting your head to the left. Slowly empty the contents of the pot into the nostril, allowing it to go throughout the sinuses and out the other nostril. Gently blow your nose and repeat on the other side. This should be done two to three times a day.
