The Fastest Way to Get Rid of a Cough

A cough can be annoying and can also lead to a sore throat if it's not treated. If you have a cough that persists for longer than a week or two, it is best to seek medical attention. Most coughs clear up with no problem but some coughs can be a sign of other serious illnesses, such as bronchitis. There are some home remedies to try if you have an irritating cough.
  1. Lozenges

    • Purchase lozenges at the drug store to get rid of your cough. If you have a dry cough, try lozenges that contain honey. Since a dry cough also irritates the throat, the honey-coated lozenges will soothe the throat and help to keep the cough to a minimum. Take at least two lozenges in the morning since coughs tend to be worst in the morning and your throat is driest. In addition, such on a lozenge periodically during the day to keep your throat moist in order reduce the desire to cough.

    Warm Drinks

    • Create a warm homemade drink mixture that measures at least a full cup. Warm drinks help to get rid of coughs and the irritation that accommodates them. Make tea mixed with a few spoonfuls of lemon and honey. The honey will coat your throat, and the lemon helps reduce inflammation caused by the cough and also provides Vitamin C to help fight infection. Reducing inflammation helps to get rid of the coughing reaction. Have at least two or three hot drinks a day until the cough subsides.

    Steam

    • Steam is an excellent remedy for a cough. If you are a member of a local gym, use the steam room, which is the best source of steam. However, a hot shower that fills the bathroom with steam can also provide this benefit. You can also fill a bowl with boiling water and inhale it; a towel draped over your head helps. After a steam treatment of at least 15 minutes, drink some hot tea. Do this before bed and be sure to sleep with your head slightly elevated. The warmth plus a good night's rest will help get rid of the cough.
