Instructions

  1. Traveling

    • 1

Avoid domesticated birds if you're traveling in regions of the world that have experienced bird flu outbreaks. Avoid rural areas, farms and markets.

    • 2

Wash your hands often. If you don't have access to soap and hot water, use hand sanitizers that are at least 60 percent alcohol.

    • 3

Get a flu shot before traveling. This will not protect against bird flu in particular, but will help reduce the risk of simultaneous infections by different flu viruses.

    Cooking

    • 4

Avoid cross-contamination when cooking with raw poultry or cooking eggs. Wash all cutting boards, utensils and surfaces that poultry products might have come in contact with, with hot, soapy water.

    • 5

Ensure that chicken is cooked until juices run clear and that the internal temperature of the bird reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the World Health Organization, cooking poultry to high enough temperatures will kill the virus. However, if you are concerned that the poultry you're preparing is infected with bird flu, don't consume it, dispose of it.

    • 6

Avoid eating raw eggs or any meals that call for raw or undercooked eggs.

    General

    • 7

Wash your hands frequently, using hot water and soap.

    • 8

Avoid touching your face. This includes rubbing your eyes, nose and mouth.

    • 9

Get an annual flu shot. Even though this won't protect against the bird flu, it can protect you from simultaneous infections should there be a bird flu outbreak.

    • 10

Take your health seriously. Eat a good diet, get enough sleep and exercise regularly. These steps keep your immune system strong and will help you fight off infection and recover more quickly if you fall ill.

    • 11

      Avoid crowds.
