How to Get Rid of White in the Throat

A white throat is often the sign of an infection such as strep throat or thrush. However, sometimes white bumps called tonsilloliths can form in the throat, these can be removed by a doctor. Usually, a white throat is the result of bacteria in the mouth. Keeping your mouth clean by brushing your teeth and tongue and rinsing with an oral antiseptic mouthwash will help. Take your temperature. If you have a fever, this may be a sign that the white in your throat is part of an infection such as strep throat. Check for swelling on the sides of your throat and any pain that accompanies the swelling. You should make an appointment with a doctor, if you have a fever and swollen glands. You will probably need antibiotics.

Soothe pain and help fight any infection in your throat by mixing one cup of hot water with ¼ teaspoon of salt. Gargle with the mixture two or three times a day for a few minutes.

Drink plenty of water. It is important to stay hydrated. If it hurts to swallow try sucking on a Popsicle or frozen ice chips. Stay away from ice cream and other milk-based foods, as this might cause phlegm and further irritate your throat. Warm drinks such as a cup of tea may also be soothing, if your throat is sore.

See your doctor to determine if the white in your throat is thrush or tonsilloliths. Thrush is a yeast infection in your mouth and you will probably need an anti-fungal medicine, such as Nystan oral suspension. Tonsilloliths can be surgically removed or treated with a proton pump inhibitor.
