Stay away from milk for the duration of your sickness. While milk will not make for more mucus, dairy products will increase the mucus thickness and lead to more stuffiness. Soy milk also has this effect so avoid it as well.

    • 2

Boil one cup of water for five minutes. While the water is very hot, add a tablespoon of honey, the juice of one half of a lemon and a one half of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Stir. Drink the concoction to soothe and clear up your throat with the added bonus that it will also help clear sinuses. Drink every two hours as you need it.

Take an over-the-counter expectorant. These create a productive cough, allowing you to drive out the mucus. Follow all instructions for frequency and dose amounts that accompany the expectorant. Blow your nose as well when you feel stuffiness; do not blow or cough too hard as this can irritate passageways.
