How to Treat a Viral Cold

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that over 200 viruses can cause the common cold. The symptoms include sore throat, stuffy nose, runny nose, cough and mild fever. Since the common cold is viral, antibiotics won't work. There are things you can do, however to treat a viral cold at home. If your symptoms do not improve within 10 days, call your doctor.

      Get proper rest. Your body needs time to regenerate, and WebMD states you will recover quicker by resting. Try to lie down as much as you can, and don't engage in physical activity.

      Hydrate your body. Drink lots of fluids -- water, tea, juice or clear broth. According to the Mayo Clinic, warm water with honey may loosen congestion and prevent dehydration.

      Eat light foods, such as white rice or broth. Don't force yourself to eat a big meal. Chicken soup may have anti-inflammatory and mucus-thinning benefits, states the Mayo Clinic.

      Take an over-the-counter pain reliever containing acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen. Follow the directions on the label.

      Gargle with saltwater for sore throat relief. The Mayo Clinic suggests making a saltwater solution with 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of salt in 8 oz. of warm water.

      Relieve nasal symptoms. For a stuffed nose, use decongestants containing pseudoephedrine. Follow the package instructions. You can also use a nasal spray containing saline, which can open nasal passages. WebMD states you can use the saline spray as often as necessary. Take antihistamines for a runny nose. Follow the directions on the label.

      Treat coughing. Use cough medicines and follow the directions on the package. Suck on cough drops to ease scratchiness. Use a humidifier or vaporizer in your bedroom. You can also try filling a sink with hot water and inhaling the steam.
