Why are antibiotics helpful for treating the common cold?

Antibiotics are ineffective against the common cold since it is caused by viruses. On the other hand, antibiotics fight against bacterial infections. Therefore, antibiotics are neither recommended for treating the common cold nor effective in doing so.
