How cold is permafrost?
Permafrost is ground that remains at or below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least two consecutive years. Permafrost temperatures can vary greatly depending on the location and depth. In general, permafrost temperatures are coldest at the surface and gradually increase with depth. In the Arctic, permafrost temperatures can reach as low as -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) at the surface, while in Antarctica, permafrost temperatures can reach as low as -50 degrees Celsius (-58 degrees Fahrenheit) at the surface.
