ThermoScan Instructions

The Braun ThermoScan IRT 4020 and IRT 4520, which are manufactured by Braun in Germany, are battery powered electronic thermometers that determine the body temperature of babies, children and adults through the ear. They use disposable covers to keep the ear probe clean and avoid transmitting infections. Both models are easy to operate and have comfortable digital readouts for temperature readings as well as guide signals to help you position the probe in the ear. The IRT 4520 includes an advanced eight-reading memory feature so that you can keep track of your body temperature or that of your child.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your ThermoScan over so that the temperature probe faces away from you.

    • 2

Press down on the bottom of the unit so that the battery compartment cover opens, and slide the compartment cover upward and toward you in order to remove it.

    • 3

Insert one alkaline battery in the left battery holder so that the positive (raised) terminal faces downward, and the second battery in the right battery holder so that the raised terminal faces upward.

    • 4

Slide the cover back on and push it firmly but carefully into place so that the compartment latch engages and snaps shut.

    • 5

Insert the ear probe into a lens filter (probe cover) so that it fits tightly on the probe and makes contact with the filter detector button at the bottom of the probe.

    • 6

Push the start button on the back of the head of the IRT 4020 or the "I/o" button below the digital display window on the front of the IRT 4520. Wait a few seconds until the unit cycles through its checks and three dashes (- - -) show on the digital display panel along with an F for Fahrenheit or C for Celsius.

    • 7

Change the temperature scale between Fahrenheit and Celsius as you wish by turning the thermometer off and then pressing the "Start" button on the IRT 4020 or the "I/o" button on the IRT 4520 and holding it down for about three seconds until the "C Set F Set" sequence appears. Release the button as soon as the scale you wish to use appears. Wait until you hear a short beep and then the thermometer will turn off. Start the thermometer again as described in step 6 above.

    • 8

Place the probe firmly into the ear canal and then press the "Start" button on the back of the head of the unit. Note that on the 4020 you would be pressing it again whereas the 4520 has a separate on/off and start button.

    • 9

Wait a moment until you hear a long beep or until the "Exact temp" light on the back of the unit above the "Start" button stops blinking and instead lights up continuously. (Note that you can only see the light if you are taking someone else's temperature.) Remove the thermometer from the ear and read the display. If you hear a sequence of short beeps or the light goes out, you will also see an error message "Pos" in the display window, meaning that the probe was not properly positioned.

    • 10

Clear the display by pressing the "Start" button of the 4020 or the "I/o" button of the 4520 once. Press the lens filter ejection button located below the probe to remove the used filter. Replace the lens filter if you want to take another reading due to error or take another person's temperature.

    • 11

Store the IRT 4520 by laying it flat in its protective case. Place the protective cap of the 4020 over its probe before storing it.

    IRT 4520 Memory Recall

    • 12

Turn on your Braun ThermoScan IRT 4520 with the "I/o" button on the front of the unit below the digital display.

    • 13

Press and release the "I/o" button again for at least one second until the latest temperature reading stored in the memory and "MEM 1" appear in the screen.

    • 14

Press and release the button again to access each memory entry. Do not hold the button down too long or you will shut the machine off.

    • 15

Exit memory mode by holding the "I/o" button down for at least one second or by cycling through each reading until you reach the oldest (MEM 8).
