How to Suppress a Cough Naturally

Coughs are an annoying symptom of many different illnesses, including the common cold, influenza, asthma and even allergies. The action of coughing is designed to clear the airways and make breathing easier, but persistent coughs can be tiring and uncomfortable. Your pharmacist may be able to suggest some suitable medication but there are several remedies you can try at home using a few basic store-bought ingredients.

  • 1 Lemon

  • 1 tsp. Dried peppermint leaves
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 1 tsp. Baking soda
  • 1 oz. Dried thyme leaves

Instructions

      Squeeze the lemon. Mix 1 tbsp. of its juice with 1 tsp. honey in 1/4 cup water. Drink twice daily.

      Cut the lemon into 4 pieces. Season with salt and pepper; suck when needed.

      Prepare a brew of peppermint tea. Infuse 1 tsp. peppermint leaves in a cup of hot water. Allow to brew for five minutes. Drink as often as required.

      Prepare a saline solution. Dissolve 1 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. baking soda in 1 pt. water. Take a small mouthful of the solution and gargle. This will help to relieve inflammation in the throat and dry mucus secretions that can cause coughing.

      Place 1 oz. thyme leaves and 1 qt. water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and allow to infuse for 10 minutes. Drink three or four cups daily.

      Drink lots of fresh, cold water. Instead of coughing, try taking small sips of water. This will help to reduce irritation and inflammation of the throat and also have a soothing effect.
