Mucus is a natural substance that your body creates to lubricate the areas inside your body's organs. This mucus can build up when you are sick and can linger even after you begin to feel better. If you small mucus, it is because there is an excessive amount of mucus in your nose. Use natural methods on your home to help fix the issue. Consult a physician if you still have mucus buildup. You may have in infection and may need to take antibiotics.

      Blow your nose to remove as much of the mucus as possible.

      Cough up mucus from your throat. Excessive mucus in your throat can eventually travel to your nasal passage, which can cause you to smell mucus.

      Fill a pot with a few inches of water. Boil the water on the stove and place it on a trivet on your table.

      Place your head over the pot and drape a towel over your head. Inhale the steam but be careful not to burn your face on the pot. The humidity will help keep the cilia in your lungs working and will help loosen any remaining mucus. Do this for 15 minutes two times per day. Cough, sneeze and blow your nose during this process to work out mucus.

      Drink 8 cups of water per day. Keeping hydrated will help loosen mucus. Drink teas that have ginger in them. Ginger contains a chemical which loosens mucus.
