Easy Ways to Reduce Congestion
-
Decongestant
-
One way to easily and quickly reduce congestion is by using a decongestant. The over-the-counter medications function by decreasing the size of the blood vessels within the nose's lining. Decongestants are available at drugstores in both nasal drop and spray form, and typically should only be used for three days or less. Decongestants aim to relieve stuffy noses, but are not intended to reduce runny nose symptoms.
Antihistamines
-
Another simple way to soothe congestion is to use an antihistamine. Antihistamines can be beneficial for decreasing mucus amounts within the nose. Less mucus can help eliminate stuffiness and also make breathing significantly easier.
Vapor
-
Vaporizing congestion can also reduce the situation. Set up either a vaporizer or a cool-mist humidifier and breathe in some of the moisture in the air. For an increased effect, add a couple of drops of peppermint oil into the tank. For those who lack humidifiers or vaporizers, emulate the effect by filling up a shallow pan with water, then placing it in the middle of the room. Lastly, take a steaming hot shower to receive a similar vapor effect, which can greatly reduce stuffy nose discomfort.
Water
-
Surprisingly, one highly effective way to combat congestion is by drinking a lot of water. Drinking water offers a lot of health benefits, including keeping the mucus thin. Mucus that is thick can encourage issues with the sinus, and therefore encourage uncomfortable congestion. Apart from water consumption, other liquids can also help, including soup, broth and hot tea.
Neti Pot
-
One increasingly popular way to reduce congestion is to use the Ayurvedic treatment of the neti pot. The neti pot works to irrigate the nasal passages with warm salt water. The salt water flushes out the pathways, and eliminates mucus obstruction which, therefore, decreases congestion, pressure and the buildup of harmful bacteria that can lead to the development of sinusitis. Neti pots can easily be purchased at most drugstores and supermarkets.
