Eating something, or chewing a piece of gum, can help get the saliva moving. According to "The American Medical Association's Family Medical Guide" the production of saliva will help to lubricate the throat, which will in turn stop the tickle or get rid of the dry spot that is causing the cough.

Drink some water with a few drops of peppermint oil in it (this must be food grade essential oils). Peppermint can help to soothe the throat and the windpipe. "The Aromatherapy Bible" says that this oil is also great for lubrication of the throat.

3
Sniff some fresh eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus works as an expectorant and will make coughs productive, according to "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies." This will clear out the phlegm that is helping to cause the uncontrollable coughing. Put some on a hankie and keep it handy anytime a cough is aggravating the body.
