Check the list of ingredients to ensure that you are not allergic to any of them. The active ingredients include acetaminophen, phenylephrine and dextromethorphan. Do not use this product if you have allergies to an ingredient.

Review your prescriptions and medical conditions. Do not use this product if you have taken an MAO inhibitor within the previous 14 days. Do not take Comtrex Cold and Cough if you have severe heart problems, such as a rapid heartbeat or very high blood pressure, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure Comtrex Cold and Cough is safe for you. Ask if it will interact with your other medications.

Take two daytime (orange) caplets once every four hours for symptom relief, according to Walgreens. Do not take more than eight caplets every 24 hours. Comtrex Cold and Cough may be taken with or without food.

Avoid taking daytime caplets within four hours of bedtime. After waiting four hours following the last daytime dosage, take two nighttime caplets. Do not use more than four nighttime caplets in 24 hours.

Stop using this product if you experience bothersome side effects. These may include anxiety, dizziness, nausea and headache.
