DIY Neti Pot

If you have sinus pressure and nasal congestion, consider using a neti pot for nasal irrigation. Nasal irrigation cleans mucus out of your sinuses and nasal passageways, according to the Mayo Clinic. You may purchase a neti pot and saline solution kit at a pharmacy, or you can make your own at home.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Clean a plastic squeeze bottle thoroughly with hot water and dish soap. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

    • 2

Add 8 oz. of distilled water to the bottle. The water must be at room temperature or slightly warmer. If you do not have distilled water, boil tap water, then cool it to room temperature.

    • 3

Add 1/8 tsp. of table salt to the bottle.

    • 4

Screw the cap on the bottle and shake it to dissolve the salt.

    Use

    • 5

Use your homemade neti pot while standing over a sink or bathtub. Tilt your head to the side.

    • 6

Gently place the bottle's spout in one nostril. If you've tilted your head to the left, place the spout in the right nostril. Slowly squirt the neti pot solution up the nostril until the solution drains out your other nostril.

    • 7

Repeat this with the other nostril, tilting your head to the other side. Blow your nose gently with a tissue when the solution has finished draining.
