Natural Remedies to Protect Against Cold Season

Colds are common during the winter months, and signs of an infection can include sneezing, running nose, congestion and tiredness. While there is no cure for the common cold, there are natural methods to reduce the duration of a cold and possibly prevent a cold.
  1. Disinfection to Kill Germs

    • Keeping a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel in your purse or car is a key way to protect yourself during cold season. Viruses and germs can live on commonly touched surfaces such as door knobs and telephones. Additionally, handshaking can pass germs from person to person. Wash your hands before eating or upon entering your home, and periodically use hand sanitizer to kill germs and reduce the risk of catching a cold. Using household disinfectant sprays and wipes also kills viruses and lowers the risk of a cold.

    Watch Your Surroundings

    • Being around sick people at home, work, or in public increases the risk of developing a cold. Be wary of sick individuals, and avoid long-term contact with people who are sneezing or coughing. Sharing food and drinks with sick individuals also places you at risk, as does sharing bathroom or kitchen towels to dry your hands.

    Vitamin C

    • Daily vitamin C supplements support the immune system and help protect against viruses such as the common cold. Visit a health food store or pharmacy, and purchase vitamin C supplements. Other supplements such as echinacea and zinc may also prove helpful in protecting yourself against colds. Read the package labels, and use supplements as directed. Consult a doctor first if you're taking a prescription medication.

Other Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System

    • In conjunction with supplements, other habits such as drinking enough fluids and getting plenty of rest help boost your immunities, helping your body fight viruses and infections during cold season. Around eight glasses of water is recommended for adults, according to the Mayo Clinic. Poor sleep habits, such as going to bed late and getting only a few hours rest, can weaken the immune system and make you susceptible to colds.
