1
Blow your nose into facial tissues on a regular basis. This will help eliminate excess mucus.
-
2
Irrigate your nostrils with salt water.
Mix 1/2 teaspoon of iodized salt with 8 ounces of warm water. Ensure that the salt is dissolved in the water.
Draw some of the salt water solution into a nasal aspirator, and insert the tip of aspirator into one of your nostrils.
Tilt your head back, hold the aspirator parallel to the roof of your mouth, and gently squeeze the aspirator to irrigate your nostrils.
Expel the water that ends up in your mouth into a sink.
Repeat with the other nostril, and then blow your nose to clear it.
Irrigate your nostrils three times per day, for five days in a row, as needed.
-
3
Gargle with saltwater to clear your throat.
Use the same solution as listed in step 2. Gargle three times a day, as needed.
-
4
Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid dairy products. Some experts believe that dairy products, such as milk, result in excess mucus production.
Warm water with lemon or herbal tea can help the postnasal drip move out of the upper respiratory area.

5
Take antihistamines, or an antihistamine and decongestant combination medication. You can purchase these over-the-counter, or you can ask your doctor for a prescription. The antihistamine will help dry up the post nasal drip, and the decongestant will assist in eliminating a stuffy nose.
