What Are Mucous Membranes?
Mucous membranes can be found in many parts of the body where the exterior meets the interior. This means areas like the nose, mouth, lungs and other places. This helps let the tissues function properly by keeping them moist.-
Purpose
-
Mucous membranes secrete mucus to help protect the membranes and keep them moist. They also protect the body by keeping out particles or creating a barrier against harmful acids.
Mucus
-
Mucus is a substance created by mucous membranes. It is a thick, gummy and slippery substance that helps the body function, depending on its location. For example, in the nose it prevents dust and particles from entering the body.
Sinuses
-
Sinuses are air pockets inside your head. There are eight located in the cheeks, under the eyes, behind and between the eyes, at the back of the nasal cavity, and in the forehead. They are also lined with mucous membranes.
Cilia
-
Cilia are microscopic hairs that line sinus cavities. They help clear mucus away.
Stomach
-
The stomach is another area lined with mucous membranes. This mucus secreted by the membranes helps coat the insides and protects the stomach from digesting its own tissue.
