Child Flu Treatment
The flu is something that most children will develop at some point in their lives. Treating flu symptoms in your child requires letting them rest, keeping them hydrated and knowing when you need a doctor's assistance.-
Identification
-
The flu or influenza is a contagious virus with sudden stomach discomfort, aches and pains, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and a runny nose.
Hydration
-
Hydration is important to consider, especially if vomiting and diarrhea are present. Your child might not feel like eating and drinking when they are ill, making it difficult to encourage fluids. To keep them hydrated give them popsicles or drinks that aren't normally allowed.
Comfort
-
Acetaminophen can be given to lower your child's fever and improve his aches and pains. Dosage can be found on the package unless you have a younger child, which will require a quick call to the doctor. Never give a child Aspirin due to the possible development of Reye's syndrome.
Medications
-
Antiviral medications such as Tamiflu can be given for children that are at risk of dangerous complications, such as heart problems or asthma. If your child is in this category, it is important to be vigilant since the medication is most effective if given in the first 48 hours.
Warning
-
Seek medical care if the following symptoms develop: difficulty breathing, ear pain, cough longer than a week, fever for more than 2 days or that comes back after a couple of days, or no improvement over several days.
