Can Sinus Congestion Affect Vision?

Sinus congestion can have affects on all areas of the head and face. Some of the most common effects of sinus congestion can be felt in the ears, the head and the eyes. Sinus congestion can sometimes adversely affect vision, but this effect generally only lasts as long as the congestion does.
  1. Facts

    • Two of the largest sinus cavities are located directly behind the eyes and nose. These cavities filter particles from the air before the air enters the lungs.

    Cause

    • When the sinuses are irritated, they swell and over produce mucus causing pressure to build up behind the eyes. This swelling results in the sinus cavity pressing on the back of the eyes creating blurry vision and spots in vision.

    Treatment

    • In order to treat vision issues related to sinus congestion a person should take a decongestant consistently for 2 to 3 days to reduce the swelling and inflammation of the sinus cavity.

    Prevention

    • If the sinus issues are due to allergies a person should take a 24-hour antihistamine to avoid sinus pressure. Maintain a healthy immune system by drinking six 8-ounce glasses of water daily, getting eight hours of sleep nightly and eating a well-balanced diet.

    Considerations

    • If vision issues continue after the sinus pressure and congestion subside, seek medical advice as there may be a more serious condition causing the problem.
