Altitude & Sinus Pain

One of the most common health complaints when traveling to high altitudes is sinus pressure and severe pain in the middle of the head, between the eyes according to www.ent-consult.com. Precautions can alleviate and avoid this unwanted sinus pain when flying.
  1. Facts

    • The sinus cavity is a large empty space in the middle of the head that filters the air breathed in through the nose before entering the lungs. The sinus cavity is very sensitive and can be aggravated by environmental conditions and altitude.

    Cause

    • When a person travels to high altitude, the air is thinner and can create pressure in the sinus cavity, especially if it is inflamed or swollen. The pressure gathers in the middle of the sinus cavities resulting in sharp, severe pain.

    Treatment

    • Take an over-the-counter decongestant before and while traveling to higher altitudes. If you are having severe congestion, take an expectorant to help the body drain the thick mucus buildup.

    Prevention

    • Gradually climb to higher altitudes allowing the sinus cavity to adjust appropriately. This cannot be avoided when flying so take an antihistamine and decongestant to prevent any pressure.

    Complications

    • In rare cases sinus pain from higher altitudes can lead to fainting spells or dizziness. If the sinus pain is the result of a sinus infection, it can lead to more serious infections if left untreated.
