Help for Nausea With the Flu

Nausea is a common symptom of the flu. It is an uneasy feeling in the stomach that sometimes leads to vomiting. If you feel nauseous, sometimes vomiting can be prevented by drinking small amounts of clear, sweetened liquids such as flat soda or by eating a Popsicle. Drinks that contain sugar calm the stomach. Most people have flu symptoms for one to two weeks before recovering. During that time, there are steps to take to help with nausea.
  1. Food

    • Give your stomach a rest when you feel nauseous. For two hours don't eat or drink anything. Then slowly start eating bland foods such as toast, saltine crackers, bread, applesauce, bananas and gelatin. Eat small, frequent meals and eat slowly. Avoid greasy, spicy, fried and dairy foods.

    Fluids

    • Drink slowly, starting with small sips. Drink weak tea, apple juice, flat 7UP or flat ginger ale. Cold drinks may be easier to keep down. Avoid caffeine and acidic drinks such as orange juice.

    Rest

    • Get as much rest as possible. The body has the ability to heal itself during sleep. Take it easy and stay home. Physical activity can aggravate nausea.

    Natural Remedies

    • Ginger root tea is a natural remedy that helps relieve nausea. Spearmint and peppermint tea soothe the stomach. Lemon juice mixed with warm water and sipped slowly can help. Aromatherapy can be used as a tool to fight nausea. Try peppermint oil or smell a fresh cut lemon.

    Medication

    • The anti-nausea drug Dramamine is a non-prescription medication. It can be found at your local drug store. Take as directed. Dramamine is not safe to take during pregnancy. If these techniques do not help with nausea, consult your physician.
