OTC Remedies for Sinus Problems
According to the Sinus and Nasal International Foundation, "sinusitis remains America's most common chronic or incurable ailment." Sinus infections are not the only condition that can affect the sinus cavity. Allergies, weather changes and the common cold can cause anyone to have sinus problems. The most common issues from inflamed or aggravated sinuses are severe congestion, runny nose, post nasal drip, sinus pressure, headaches and tooth pain. Many of these issues can be easily treated with over-the-counter remedies.-
Use Medication
-
Use medication to treat the symptoms of sinus problems. The most common medication to treat sinus issues is a decongestant. Use a decongestant to reduce the swelling of the sinus cavity and restrict the production of excessive mucus. Use a decongestant with an expectorant if the sinuses are completely blocked and you are unable to breathe through either nostril. An expectorant will help break up and thin any thick mucus that is blocking breathing and expel it from the body. Use an antihistamine if the sinus problems are related to allergies. An antihistamine can be used alongside a decongestant and expectorant. Take an anti-inflammatory pain reliever to assist with pain reduction and reducing inflammation in the sinuses.
Use Saline Sprays and Washes
-
Purchase a saline spray and a sinus wash from a pharmacy or grocery store. Use the saline spray two to three times a day. Spray twice in one nostril at a time while holding the other nostril shut. Breathe in as you spray the saline solution into the sinus cavity so it is received high and deep. After spraying in both nostrils gently blow the nose. Use a saline wash one to two times a day. This can be done with a neti pot, a small teapot used to irrigate the sinuses. Prepare the sinus wash as directed on the package of the neti pot (this usually includes mixing warm water with salt).
Use Natural Remedies
-
Purchase natural over-the-counter remedies. Try nasal strips that open your passages. Place a nasal strip on your nose before going to sleep and wear it throughout the night. Remove it in the morning and repeat at night. Buy vapor rub that is placed on the chest and releases natural fumes like eucalyptus and mint that will open up the nasal passages. Purchase a cool mist humidifier and keep it running in your house to maintain 40 percent humidity at all times. This will maintain the proper moister in the sinuses and prevent them from further irritation.
